Gary A. Nilsen is a writer and blogger whose work reflects a unique blend of life experience, discipline, and curiosity. Although his professional career in finance has spanned nearly five decades, his creative journey has been deeply influenced by his passion for history, storytelling, and the fascinating balance between fact and imagination.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and later on Long Island, Gary developed an early connection with storytelling through movies and the stories his mother read to him as a child. At the age of fourteen, during a summer afternoon, he discovered how exciting and fulfilling it could be to create stories of his own. Inspired by the works of Agatha Christie, Alfred Hitchcock’s short stories, and the Gothic romances of Victoria Holt, he felt naturally drawn toward becoming a writer himself.
During his college years, Gary immersed himself in adventure and thriller novels by authors such as Alistair MacLean and Robert Ludlum, which further fueled his love for suspenseful storytelling and exploration. His personal desire for adventure eventually led him to work in Saudi Arabia for several years and later become involved in underwater archaeology. While living in Arabia, he spent five years reading authors including Stephen King, Clive Cussler, Ken Follett, and Tom Clancy. This period ultimately inspired him to begin seriously pursuing writing.
In addition to his literary work, Gary has lectured on underwater archaeology and taught creative writing, successfully combining real-world experience with a storyteller’s talent for atmosphere, detail, and suspense.
Gary earned his MFA in Fiction from Southern New Hampshire University. He currently lives in Arizona with his partner, Nancy, and continues to write stories centered around discovery, mystery, depth, and the allure of the unknown.
